Art, Culture, and Innovation in the Shade: Rincón de Color

On April 19, we gathered under the sun, and the shade to celebrate the unveiling of our Rincón de Color at Cielito Park, the first installation in the City of Phoenix’s ¡SOMBRA! Experiments in Shade series. What began last year as a collaboration with my friend and fellow artist Jose Benavides for a colorful oasis, our public art piece came to life through community, culture, and collaboration. The opening ceremony was something I’ll never forget. It was grounded in tradition, filled with joy, and made whole by the people who showed up to bless it and connect under the sun and the colors.

The celebration began with an ancestral blessing and a powerful danza by Danza Huehuecoyotl, grounding the event in tradition and gratitude. As the rhythmic movements filled the air, I felt a deep connection to my ancestors. I felt elevated and yet grounded. This feeling was deep and visceral. It was something very hard to describe. I also felt extremely inspired, and proud.

The atmosphere was further enriched by the aroma of tacos, conversations, and a few speeches. The official ribbon cutting included the MEChA students from Alhambra High School, all of whom played a key role in this project.

Our shade structure is adorned with large colorful panels inspired by Oaxacan alebrijes, not only is it vibrant and playful but it also serves a practical purpose. That purpose is to provide shelter from Phoenix’s extreme heat. A 95% UV-blocking canopy, combined with a solar-powered misting system, creates a cooler temperature beneath it, dropping by as much as 27 degrees. Rincón de Color is a fusion of art and utility, designed to invite people to gather beneath and offer respite from the heat.

As I saw friends, families, students, and neighbors gather and engage with the art, my belief in the power of community-driven projects was reaffirmed. Rincón de Color is more than a public art structure; it's a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with the intent of creating a useful and practical public art project.

This public art installation will remain at Cielito Park through September 20, 2025. I invite you to visit, experience the cooler shade, and feel the inspiration painted on every panel. I’m extremely proud of this project.
